Sumptuous fabrics, high quality craftsmanship and a culture that breathes romance are all factors that make Paris the capital of lingerie. A Parisian lingerie designer that perhaps best translates what the majority of women would associate with French lingerie, is Madame Louise Feuillère. Located on the 17th arrondissement, in Rue des Dames – no street could be more appropriate – her atelier-workshop is home to the most exquisite and refined lingerie creations.
Madame Louise is quite a character. Not only is she very knowledgeable but she is funny and sweet. Over the course of our conversation, I learned of her passion for undergarments and how she got her start. Ms. Feuillère learned the art of sewing from her grandmother. Her parents tried to convince her to become an accountant, but instead she went on to study art history at the Sorbonne and design at l’École Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode, the well-known Parisian school of fashion design. Her guru and personal coach was Christianne Mogenet, the oldest corset maker in Paris. In 2007 she won the Meilleur Ouvrier de France title for lingerie-corsetry (Best Craftsman of France), the first time in over 30 years that the award was given to a corsetry and lingerie designer.
Her couture and made to measure lingerie ranges from velvet-ribboned bustiers, wasp-waisted silk corsets, soft mohair bed jackets and exquisite satin thongs. She also keeps some unique creations such as voluminous underskirt in precious tulle and frilled pantaloons. Ms. Feuillère uses only French lace from the Calais area near the Belgian border, as well as washable silks from France and Italy and sheer plumetis cotton from Switzerland.
Usually I am not a fan of cotton in lingerie, but I have to say that her lingerie sets made with this material are sublime and anything but mundane. I love how all the garments not only look good but they are also feminine and luxurious while being comfortable and supportive. You can easily tell that Madame Feuillere designs are a masterpiece of quality and technique.
These hand made pieces come at a dear price (starting from €350) but it is worth it if you want to spoil yourself with exclusive lingerie that perfectly fits your curves. As Madame Louise states: “Lingerie is the first decision you make when it comes to dressing, it sets the mood of the day”. With that as your inspiration you should set your mood with the best.
