New York Fashion Week has jumpstarted the next month of fashion week events which will take us to London, Paris and Milan. It is almost an impossible task to narrow down our focus to six collections but we managed to make it.
The Marc Jacobs show was one of the most awaited collections and it did not disappoint. It combined a sophisticated feel with an obscure and mysterious appeal reminiscent of the Victorian and Gothic age. Masculine tailored fabrics combined with ultra feminine silhouettes and rich elements added a unique touch to each look. Mid and long length full skirts, double-breasted coats with oversized buttons were the leitmotif adorned with brocade, fur, glitter and leopard printed details. PVC high-knee boots, elbow length leather gloves and super tight skinny belts among the accessories.
Michael Kors AW15 collection was grown-up, chic. Fur was everywhere: from maxi coats, stoles, collars and patch pockets in nuances of grey, camel, navy and olive. Double-breasted jackets cinched in at the waist with slim belts interspersed with cape-coats, midi length day dresses and skirted suits evoked the 40s glamour nostalgia. These designs could keep you warm on the coldest NYC day.
Peter Copping’s first collection for Oscar de la Renta was well received from the audience and managed to live up to the name of the legendary designer. Copping managed to add a youthful component to the exceptional evening wear and maintain the couture craftsmanship that the fashion house has been known for. Full-skirted day suits, mink coats, 3D floral appliquéd dresses and gowns in a variety of materials such as silk and tulle were in keeping with the iconic of Oscar de la Renta brand.
The Phillip Lim AW15 collection with its utilitarian plaid and leather pieces, asymmetrical hems and zipped details was an ode to grunge and punk culture. This was a fitting way to celebrate the label’s 10th anniversary while also maintaining its position as a brand for “rebellious women”. The outwear pieces were the strongest part of the collection. It was all about layers. Parkas and coats were treated with extensive details with straps and fur.
Tommy Hilfiger celebrated its 30s birthday with an AW15 collection that is young, dynamic with an athletic flare. References to American sports was the central theme: varsity sweatshirts in faux fur, silk baseball jackets, pleated mini skirt and football inspired V-neck sweater dresses decorated the runway.
The Zac Posen AW15 collection was split between beautiful day dresses and red carpet ready evening gowns. Different tones of red in a variety of fabrics such as fur, silk, velvet and other shimmering materials made up most of the collection. Belted coats paired with trousers were present on the runway for the women looking to escape the limelight lifestyle. Among the accessories, mini fur scarves and large square sunglasses were the standouts. The show closed out with Naomi Campbell gracing the runway with a gorgeous ball gown.
